Before you read this, I expect most of you to know the basic types of cammies as well as proper places to source gear. Whether it be ASGI or OpTactical.
Gear, next to proper tactics is one of the most important aspects of MilSim. A common misconception is that to have an accurate loadout you need the most gucci and expensive stuff on the market today. Most of the time, that is not true. Most guys are probably going to use what is either issued, on sale or cheap.
The guide will go over two main points: How to make a rig realistic and how to keep your wallet from screaming... Too much.
The budget that we will be working with is around 150, not counting the cost of a rifle.
Generally, if this is your budget, you are either new or dislike the idea of shelling tons on gear. Before you continue, THIS IS OK.
With this budget one can very easily put together a respectable impression or like minded loadout based around Army SF, CIA SAD or Brit SAS and SBS working with Northern Alliance types or other indigenous forces in Iraq or Astan.
Reference Pics:
Firstly, the Brits.
"UKSF operatives, thought to be C Squadron SBS, pictured in Southern Iraq, 2003, arresting suspected insurgents."
"December 11th, 2001 - A member of the Special Boat Service inspects damage done by U.S. air strikes at the Tarnak farms camp - an abandoned Al-Qaeda training facility on the southern outskirts of Kandahar airport."
Both and pic vids taken during the battle of Qala-i-Jangi.
The rigs above are pretty simple and straightforward, chest rigs, claymore(?) bags, The occasional Tac Vest and 5.11 style vests. There is an abundance of this type of gear on the market either replica or otherwise for great prices. eBay is a GREAT source for stuff like this. In terms of clothing, and earth tones should do you fine, I have also seen numerous pics of patterned or plaid shirts being used. You can source the latter at the good 'ole Salvation Army.
And now onto the Americans.
Army SF in Astan. Seemingly early OEF.
Once again, Army SF. From the way they're dressed, it looks as if they are working with Northern Alliance types.
ODA 334 in Astan. Great pic due to the variation in kit. A few Rhodesian rigs, Chicoms and even a RACK can be seen in the pic. All of the above can had for relatively cheap so long as your Google-Fu is up to snuff.
RIP.
CAG better known as D3ltaF0rsh PSD operation. I must that the armor carrier those guys are rocking are old school Safariland rigs and are worth ALOT to collectors. But the point is, KISS.
DEVGRU PSD. Yeah, yeah, MBSS. But in all honesty, buy a Condor or Pantac PC/MBSS, kit it out and you will look the part fine.
This guide wasn't really meant to be comprehensive. It was more used to reinforce the point that you don't need the Gucciest kit in the world to do something realistic. If this helps at least one person, I've done my job.
Any questions? Put 'em here and we will try with all (most) of our might to get them answered!
Hope any of this helped, gents.
